CHAPTER ELEVEN

Amiya

The moonlight crept through the rain-pelted window, filling the room with a watery glow. I released a sigh and rolled over to watch the rain. I couldn’t sleep. For years I had been waiting for this night. All of them under the same roof. The future I had been hoping for was finally becoming reality. But this also meant a dangerous path we had to follow. No one’s future was guaranteed. Not even mine.

Giving up on sleep, I sat up and rolled my head back trying to work the kinks out of my neck. Having the weight of the world on my shoulders didn’t help. I had always known of my importance in the world. There were visions of me before I was born about how I would be a key seer in the war. The Le Coterie has been trying to find me, to coerce me into working on their side, but I just couldn’t bring myself to dive that dark. My sister on the other hand…

Lillian wasn’t shy about her powers, and the Le Coterie were more than happy to take her in, hoping it would entice me to join as well.

I scoffed at the thought. They obviously didn’t know my relationship with my sister very well.

But what the Le Coterie didn’t know, was that Lillian didn’t have near the power I had. Lillian couldn’t see multiple witches at once, nor could she force herself to see different outcomes should a witch choose a different path. Lillian was more of a short term seer. Her magic worked in small bursts. Like déjà vu. She also couldn’t send her witches to see their future, but that was a secret I held from more than just the Le Coterie.

I slipped on my robe and made my way to the kitchen, my feet padding softly across the wooden floor. Grabbing a kettle, I filled it with water and set it on the stove to heat up and leaned over the marbled countertop, thrumming my fingers to the rhythm of the rain, staring out the small kitchen window. The darkness of the night made me feel small and closed in. I preferred the daylight. I knew what could be lurking around in the shadows of the night and no one in their right mind wouldn’t be afraid of the dark knowing that.

“I don’t pretend to know how your magic works,” Torres said, opening the fridge, the light from inside illuminated the dark room. “But, thank you.”

I turned, folding my arms across my chest. The eeriness of having my back to the window chilled me all the way through to the bone. I had been so engrossed in my thoughts I hadn’t heard him entering behind me. I forced a smile. No one needed to know my insecurities.

Especially right now.

They all looked to me for answers. For help. For hope.

“Whatever do you mean?”

Torres pulled out a slab of steak left over from dinner and flopped it on the cutting board. “You knew what would happen tonight.
